In a landmark decision that reflects the league’s growing popularity and commercial strength, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is officially preparing to expand from six to eight franchises after the conclusion of the 2025 season. PSL CEO Salman Naseer confirmed the development during a press briefing, outlining a new strategic vision that includes broader fan engagement, greater market penetration, and the inclusion of new cities in Pakistan’s premier T20 tournament.

Why Is the PSL Expanding?

Since its inception in 2016, the PSL has grown into one of the top-tier T20 leagues globally, known for its high-quality bowling, fierce rivalries, and emerging talent. The decision to expand from six to eight teams comes in response to:

  • Increased Viewership: PSL 2024 and 2025 saw record-breaking broadcast ratings, both domestically and in the overseas market.
  • Franchise Interest: Multiple investors have shown interest in acquiring new PSL teams, especially from regions like Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Hyderabad.
  • Commercial Opportunity: With a new media and sponsorship rights cycle expected in 2026, league administrators aim to boost league valuation and revenues.

According to Salman Naseer, “The league has matured. We believe that now is the right time to grow—not just in terms of teams, but in terms of reach, infrastructure, and talent development.”

Cities in Contention for New Franchises

Although no final decisions have been made, two cities are at the center of expansion speculation:

  • Faisalabad: A cricket-loving region with a history of producing talent like Saeed Ajmal and Misbah-ul-Haq. The Iqbal Stadium is under renovation and may be certified for PSL matches by 2026.
  • Hyderabad (Sindh): The Sindh Cricket Stadium is reportedly being upgraded to meet PCB standards. The city offers a large fan base and commercial interest.

Other cities reportedly under review include Sialkot, Bahawalpur, and Peshawar (with a second team possibility), but the PSL management has confirmed that no two teams from the same city will be introduced in the same season.

What Will Change with an 8-Team Format?

The expansion to eight teams will result in several key structural and logistical changes:

  • More Matches: The current double round-robin format (30 matches) will increase to 34 or more, depending on scheduling.
  • Longer Season: The tournament may extend by an additional 7–10 days to accommodate the expanded fixtures.
  • Player Pool Diversification: The PSL will need to expand its draft pool, bringing in more foreign and domestic players. Development programs are already underway to strengthen the Pakistan U23 and emerging player pipelines.

Impact on the League’s Economy

The two new franchises are expected to fetch franchise fees exceeding $25 million each, a significant jump from earlier seasons. With renewed interest from corporate sponsors, broadcasting companies, and even international sports groups, the expansion is forecast to inject an estimated $60–70 million into Pakistan’s cricket economy over the next three years.

Expert Reactions

Cricket analysts have broadly welcomed the move. Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq stated, “The PSL expansion is long overdue. We have the talent and the audience—this will also provide a platform for players from overlooked regions.”

Franchise stakeholders, however, are cautious. Some existing team owners have expressed concerns about talent dilution and commercial rights redistribution, especially in overlapping markets. PSL management has promised open consultations before the final bidding process begins.

What’s Next?

The official roadmap for expansion is expected to be released after PSL 2025 concludes in June. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will then open the bidding process for new franchises and begin drafting the revised playing schedule for PSL 2026.

PSL fans can also expect exhibition matches in potential new cities—most notably in Peshawar and Faisalabad—to test local infrastructure and fan response before full inclusion in the league.

Final Word

The expansion of the Pakistan Super League to eight teams is a monumental step forward. As PSL continues to solidify its place among the top T20 leagues in the world, this growth phase could bring untapped talent, bigger fan bases, and enhanced cricketing infrastructure to Pakistan. With the right execution, PSL’s evolution into an 8-team league could mark a new era in South Asian franchise cricket.
